Without Honour
This is the true story of a young White Policeman in Mugabe's Zimbabwe in the early 1980s. It details his funny as well as horrific experiences as a Policeman and prosecutor.
In his book Robb Ellis describes a meeting with a representative of Zimbabwe's secret intelligence service, CIO. It took place in the beginning of the 1980's on the scene of a crime when Ellis was investigating a case in which a teacher had been murdered in cold blood by soldiers from Mugabe's secret army in front of his young pupils. Before the shooting of their teacher the children had been abused, threatened to death and forced to sing songs extolling the virtues of Robert Mugabe and his party, ZANU PF.
Robb Ellis dream had been to become – and remain – just an ordinary policeman. He wanted to solve crimes and make law-abiding citizens out of criminals. But it was not going to be as simple as that. Just like every good policeman he did his job and left his political opinions at home. He was young, had a sense of duty and did his job until his black superiors called him a racist, considered him to be a security risk and forced him into house-arrest.
He becomes embroiled in the genocide of the time. At a time when the Western Media was lauding Mugabe as a moderate, Robb and other Policemen were picking up the dead bodies and parts of bodies of people murdered by his 5th Brigade and CIO (Central Intelligence Organisation). One day Mugabe sees him at a parade and calls him over to speak to him. In the end, he gives up his Police career due to threats.
This was just the beginning of the witch hunt of whites in Zimbabwe perpetrated by the government, a witch hunt which later on was to claim many victims. The white farmers were threatened, deprived of all of their rights and were murdered. As the number of whites fleeing the country increased further, Zimbabwe became more and more traditionally African.
The book is 248 pages long, and about 3 dozen pictures.
It is available from Lulu Where it is available as a stand alone book or can be ordered as a PDF from either Or African Crisis for with an online interview. And Amazon and direct from Robb via his website.

"The Saints"

At last! This is the history of the Rhodesian Light Infantry. We've seen the stories of the more 'glamourous' Selous Scouts, the SAS and the Rhodesian Air Force, but very little about the RLI, often underrated, but arguably one of the most effective counter-insurgency units of all time. This was the unit that brought the 'Fireforce' concept to the world's attention - the devastatingly ruthless airborne envelopment and annihilation of a guerrilla enemy. The RLI was a veritable 'foreign legion' with over 20 diverse nationalities serving in her ranks. It is a glossy coffee-table, pictorial format with hundreds of colour photos, maps, rolls, honours and awards. It is not intended as a definitive history but, with more of a classic 'scrapbook' feel, the presentation attempts to capture the essence of this fine unit - what it was like to be a troopie. We have accessed a host of unique, previously unpublished photos and illustrative material and many former RLI members have embraced the project, generously contributing photos, memorabilia and anecdotes. Ian Smith has written his tribute in the front and the foreword is by the last CO, Lieutenant-Colonel Charlie Aust.

Goodbye Rhodesia

Chris Mears' account of 25 years in the Rhodesian bush is written lovingly and colourfully and with great humour. She writes vividly about the animals who shared their home from time to time, such as the leguaan, similar in size and appearance to a crocodile, who took up residence in the roof: "We used to hear him dragging himself above the ceiling board in the sitting room, creating a loud slushing and sliding noise that resounded through the roof space." Other housemates included the abandoned bush-baby reared by them who developed a taste for alcohol, and the praying mantis who lived in a mosquito net over their bed.
There is also stories of Victoria falls and Zimbabwe Ruins and farming ways of life.
"Goodbye Rhodesia" keeps the reader well entertained while offering an insight into a way of life that is most certainly gone forever.
Beloved African

Beloved African is a story of a great and enduring love, of pioneering adventure in the early days of Rhodesia, of its builders, educators, history, triumphs and troubles. The story is written by Jill Baker and draws on her mother Nancy Hammond’s precise memory for detail, on hundreds of letters written and lovingly preserved since the early 1900’s and on a series of tape recordings with John, the Beloved African, 18 months before his death in South Australia in 1996.
John Hammond was one of Rhodesia’s great educators- beloved by black and white alike. The extraordinary role he played is woven against a backdoor of increasing tension...as he strode the political and educational stages, fighting for the extra time he needed to educate his schoolboys and girls to the point where they would be in a position to lead the new Zimbabwe with wisdom and integrity.
The agonies of what subsequently occurred and the effect it had on him as well as, through it all, the wonderful story of this almost fairy-tale love affair, are described with candour and clarity. The book gives a not always popular view of what life was like to those who were determined to try and make it work but whose efforts were so often thwarted by political duplicity.
